Title: Empowering physical activity in everyday contexts through ubiquitous technology

Low cost body sensing technologies used in combination with multisensory feedback offer novel possibilities to support physical activity rehabilitation in long-term conditions. Such technologies now offer the potential to go beyond merely tracking activity for later reflection, to regulating emotions and enhancing awareness of body capabilities in real-time. In this talk, I will focus on my work in designing technology for physical rehabilitation in chronic pain to illustrate how such use of technology could lead to more effective physical rehabilitation through integrating it in everyday activities and supporting users at both physical and psychological levels. I will show how this sensing technology can allow us to go beyond measuring and reflecting on one’s behaviour by exploiting embodied bottom-up mechanisms that enhance how we perceive our body and its capabilities. In doing so, I will also highlight the challenges that this work brings up.
