After an apprenticeship with BT’s Research and Development department I went to study Electronic Systems Engineering at the University of Essex. I returned to BT to work as a designer, project manager then group leader on projects that ranged from developing the world's first video on demand service, to collaborations with Microsoft building corporate groupworking products. I then joined the School of Experimental Psychology at Bristol to pursue an interest in visual perception and social cognition, and completed a PhD in the perception of facial expressions. After postdoctoral positions exploring the use of new modeling techniques in face perception, and haptic perception of shapes, I joined the newly formed MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU), where I’m part of a team developing novel tools and methods for data capture. My role in the IEU overlaps many of the themes in the SPHERE project, and I collaborate closely with the SPHERE project team.
