Taking part in the SPHERE study

SPHERE is developing a system of sensors for the home that could detect a range of healthcare issues. We are testing them in homes in and around Bristol in 2017 and 2018.

The study will help us understand how the system works and will help us to understand how it could diagnose or prevent serious health conditions in the future.

If you are interested in taking part, we’d first suggest you’d either contact us for a chat, where we can show you a selection of the sensors and talk about what taking part in the study would involve, or look at our selection of short films describing how some of the sensors work.

Taking part in the SPHERE study requires a certain amount of commitment – we’d ideally like people to have the sensors in their homes for between 3 months and a year.

There is very little you need to do once the system is installed, but you will need to wear a wristband when you are in the house, and charge it every few weeks. Other than that we may occasionally ask you if you’d be happy to give us the answer to some questions or take part in a ‘mini study’ but these are optional.

Do I have to live in Bristol?

Unfortunately, we can only install the technology in homes in or near (within ½ hours drive or so of Bristol)

Do I have to own my own home?

You have to either own your home or have your landlord’s permission.

Does everyone in the house have to take part?

Yes, all members of the household have to agree to take part. Children under 18 can be consented by their parents

Will I benefit?

The system does not give live feedback, so will not be able to offer medical assistance to you and cannot be relied upon to do this. We do contribute toward your electricity and offer a thank you a various stages in the form of a voucher.

How do you look after my data?

We have a very careful process to ensure your data is kept private. You can pause or delete data collection at any time. Please ask us for more details

What information do the cameras collect?

The cameras only collect silhouette data. Please see our short film for more information.
